Local history
From Sturgis Falls to a University Town on the Cedar
Cedar Falls was first settled in March 1845 by William Sturgis and Erasmus Adams, and for its first few years the settlement went by Sturgis Falls. In 1849 it was renamed for the cedar trees along the river, and Britannica dates its incorporation to 1853. The Iowa State Normal School opened here in 1876, and that school is now the University of Northern Iowa.
The 2020 census counted 40,713 people, which made Cedar Falls the 13th largest city in Iowa. It sits just west of Waterloo, a short drive away. A town that has been growing for 180 years has every kind of door hardware you can think of, from old mortise locks in downtown Victorians to smart deadbolts on new west-side builds.
That range matters when you call a locksmith. A key that turns stiffly in a century-old lock calls for a different fix than a keypad that has stopped talking to its app. Telling the locksmith the age and style of the house up front helps them bring the right parts for home lock repair and new deadbolts.
Renters
Student Rentals Near UNI and the Case for Rekeying Between Leases
UNI enrolled about 9,200 students in fall 2025, and the city's median age in recent Census estimates is just 29.3. A lot of those residents rent, and rental keys travel. Former tenants, their roommates, a cleaning crew and a past maintenance person may all have had a copy at some point.
Rekeying swaps the pins inside an existing lock so old keys stop working, and it usually costs less than replacing the whole lock. For landlords with several units, it is a sensible step at every turnover. Our page on rekeying and lock replacement explains when a rekey is enough and when new hardware makes more sense.
Tenants should know that Iowa's landlord and tenant law requires a landlord to give at least 24 hours' notice before entering a unit, except in emergencies. If you want a lock changed or rekeyed as a renter, talk to your landlord first, since the lease usually covers who controls the keys.

Common calls
Lock and Key Problems Locksmiths Often Hear About in Cedar Falls
Apartment Lockouts
Keys left inside a unit or a lost fob for a building door. A locksmith can often open a standard lock without damage, though the building owner may need to approve it.
Lost Car Keys
Modern keys with transponder chips need cutting and programming. The locksmith will ask for the year, make and model before quoting.
Move-In Rekeys
New homeowners and new tenants often want every exterior lock rekeyed so no one else holds a working key.
Worn Downtown Hardware
Older commercial doors near the river can have tired cylinders and latches that stick. Repair is sometimes possible before replacement.
Broken Keys
Snapped keys stuck in a cylinder can usually be extracted, and a new key cut from the lock or the code.
Smart Lock Glitches
Dead batteries and failed keypads lock people out more than you might expect. Most smart locks have a backup key cylinder worth knowing about.
Flood history
What the 2008 Cedar River Flood Means for Downtown Doors
In June 2008 the Cedar River crested at 102.1 feet at the Cedar Falls gauge, the highest crest in the National Weather Service record for that gauge and more than three feet above the next highest, 98.9 feet in 2016. Downtown was evacuated, and a sandbagged levee held back the river. The American Planning Association's case study notes the levee nearly failed and was reinforced with sandbags at several points.
The city has facilitated the purchase and removal of 331 floodplain properties, and the levee now runs about a mile and protects 63 acres. The city reports the river has crested above flood stage at least 94 times since 1929, and Black Hawk Creek and Dry Run Creek are among the other waterways near the city.
Water, silt and the cleanup chemicals that follow are hard on lock cylinders, latch springs and exit hardware. After any high-water event, it is worth checking that every exterior door still locks smoothly. Businesses with panic bars or commercial locks and exit devices should test them before reopening, because a sticky exit device is a safety problem, not only a security one.
Main Street
Victorian Houses and Older Storefronts Around Downtown
Historic Victorian homes are concentrated in and around downtown Cedar Falls, while newer houses and townhomes fill the edges of town. The median year built for Cedar Falls homes is 1969, according to published housing data, so a large share of the housing stock is over 50 years old.
Old houses tend to have original doors that have shifted over the decades. A deadbolt that drags or a latch that misses the strike plate is often a door alignment issue, not a bad lock. A locksmith can usually tell the difference quickly.
The riverfront has its own history with keeping things secure. The round Cedar Falls Ice House, finished in November 1921, once held 6,000 to 8,000 tons of river ice and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1977. Today it is the Ice House Museum.

Quick answer
Does Iowa Require Locksmiths to Hold a State License?
No. Iowa does not have a statewide locksmith license, so there is no state database where you can look a locksmith up. That puts the checking on you. Ask for a photo ID, the name of the business, and a written price before any work starts, and match the person who arrives to the name you were given on the phone.
Public awareness
The Low Phone Quote That Turns Into a Big Bill
The Federal Trade Commission has warned consumers that some locksmiths advertising locally may not be local at all, and has urged people to research a locksmith before they need one. A pattern described in consumer alerts goes like this: a reasonable price is quoted over the phone, and the bill at the end of the job is much higher.
Other consumer agencies point to warning signs such as an unmarked vehicle, no uniform and no identification. We would add one more: be cautious if someone insists on drilling out a standard lock on a simple lockout before trying anything else. Most residential lockouts do not require destroying the lock.
If something feels wrong, you can stop before work starts. Complaints about a business can be filed with the Iowa Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division. This note is general public awareness and is not a statement about any locksmith we connect you with.

Getting around
US-20, US-218 and the Avenue of the Saints
Cedar Falls sits where several major routes meet. US-218 runs as a freeway from Waterloo toward Cedar Falls, the Avenue of the Saints corridor bypasses Waterloo on its way here, and US-218 continues north with Iowa 27 toward Waverly and Charles City. US-20 crosses the area east to west, and Iowa 58 runs north from US-20 through Cedar Falls.
If you are locked out of a car on one of these roads, give the locksmith the nearest exit, intersection or business so they can find you. Pull fully off the road and stay safe while you wait. Our page on car lockouts and replacement car keys covers what details to have ready.

Services and Nearby Areas
Home Locksmith
With a median home built in 1965 and thousands of pre-war houses, many Waterloo doors have worn deadbolts, old mortise locks and sagging strikes that a local locksmith can sort out.
Car Lockouts & Car Keys
Waterloo winters average lows near 15 degrees, which means frozen door locks, weak fob batteries and snapped keys, plus everyday lockouts and transponder key programming for local drivers.
Emergency Lockout Service
When Waterloo winter lows average near 15 degrees, a late-night lockout is more than an annoyance, so we connect you with independent locksmiths for house, car and business lockouts and break-in repairs.
Rekeying & Lock Replacement
About a third of Waterloo homes are rentals, so tenant turnover, lost keys and new home purchases keep rekeying busy. It swaps the pins so old keys stop working without new hardware.
Commercial Locksmith
Downtown Waterloo's two historic commercial districts mix 1880s masonry with modern storefront doors, panic bars and master key systems that need a locksmith who knows commercial hardware.
Safe Opening & Safe Locks
From gun safe keypads with dying 9-volt batteries to estate safes found in older Waterloo basements, a local safe technician can open, repair and reset safe locks without moving them.
Hudson
Hudson, founded in 1857, has late-1800s homes near its center and newer builds to the north, so older lock repairs and move-in rekeys come up often.
Janesville
Janesville, founded in 1849 and split by the Cedar River and the Bremer and Black Hawk county line, keeps growing, so rekeying after a move is one of the most common calls.
Evansdale
Evansdale's housing has a median build year of 1954, so older knob locks, missing deadbolts and move-in rekeys are typical calls on Waterloo's east side.
Cedar Falls Locksmith FAQ
Can a locksmith help with a lockout at a UNI-area apartment?
Often, yes. A locksmith can usually open a standard apartment door, but many buildings want the owner or manager to approve lock work. Have your ID and lease handy, and ask if your building has an on-call manager first.
Should we rekey after buying an older house in Cedar Falls?
It is a good idea. You have no way of knowing how many keys previous owners handed out over the years. Rekeying every exterior lock is usually cheaper than replacing them, and it means only your keys work.
Our downtown storefront went through a flood. Should we have the locks checked?
Yes. Water and silt can leave cylinders and exit devices stiff or corroded. Have every exterior lock and panic bar tested before you reopen, since exit hardware must work freely.
Is there a state license number we can ask for in Iowa?
No. Iowa has no statewide locksmith license. Ask for a photo ID, the business name and a written price instead, and confirm those details yourself before work starts.
How do we avoid a locksmith bait and switch?
Get the full price on the phone, including any trip fee, and have the locksmith confirm it when they arrive. Be wary of unmarked vehicles, no identification, or pressure to drill a lock right away. You can decline the job if the price changes.
Can a locksmith make a new car key if we lost all of ours?
In many cases, yes. Mobile locksmiths often cut and program keys on site for many vehicles. They will need the year, make and model, and proof of ownership.
